Surgery Preparation

(Pre and Post Surgery)The need for Surgery can bring on fear, stress and anxiety.  Research has shown that hypnosis can help in preparing the mind and the body to face surgery without fear and recover faster.

The development of concepts, beliefs and practices related to hypnosis and hypnotherapy has been documented since prehistoric to modern times.

Hypnosis has had a long history of involvement in surgery.  Prior to the discovery of anesthesia, hypnosis was used by a number of surgeons including Dr. James Braid who is credited for pioneering “hypno-surgery” back in the early nineteenth century and was reported to have successfully used hypnosis on his surgical patients.

Hypnotherapy has been recognized by The American Medical Association as a viable treatment since 1958.

In a controlled study trial in 2007, a group of 200 women were preparing to undergo breast surgery (biopsy or lumpectomy).  Half of them were randomly assigned to a hypnosis group prior to the surgery where they were given suggestions for relaxation, peace, reduced pain, nausea and fatigue.  The others were assigned to be in a discussion group with a doctor who provided supportive, empathetic comments.

Patients in the hypnosis group experienced significantly less pain, fatigue, discomfort and emotional upset.  They also needed significantly less pain medication before, during and after the operation.

Hypnosis has also been helpful for post-surgery and has been shown effective in facilitating faster healing and recovery.

In a study of patients up to (7) weeks after undergoing a surgical procedure, researchers found greater healing and improvement in patients who had used hypnosis over those who only received supportive attention or “standard post operative care.”
